“I started going there few years ago when I lived in Roseville. I moved out of the area, but still make a drive to see Dr Thornton and staff. Always friendly, helpful, knowledgeable . Great selection of frames and never a long wait to get the order.”

“I had an introductory eye examination and I was very impressed with the doctor and the staff. The staff were very welcoming and helpful and Dr. Nguyen was very competent both in her exam procedures as well as explaining the exam results and the implications. I also appreciated that, when my results weren't very bad, that she was up front about not necessarily recommending that I get new glasses beyond my over the counter readers. I felt that she was genuinely interested in making the same recommendation that she would have made to her personal friend or family member. That is the standard I set for an ethical practice. Now I would not hesitate to refer my friends or family to her.”

Blue Light Awareness

Blue light is an increasingly common topic as digital devices have come to dominate daily life. Until the introduction of LED screens, exposure to blue light came exclusively from the sun, but now blue light waves are also emitted from LED lights and digital screens such as your TV, tablet, smartphone, and computer screen. Research has linked blue light to several different health concerns, so it is important to understand the benefits and dangers in order to protect your eyes and maintain your vision and health.

The main health concerns that stem from high levels of blue light exposure are:

1. Eye strain and fatigue
More people are complaining of eye strain and fatigue as a result of computer use than they are of carpal tunnel now. When blue light enters the eye, it defocuses in front of the retina, causing a glare. The eye is constantly straining to focus the light which causes discomfort.

2. Macular Degeneration
More commonly known as age related macular degeneration, blue light is taking out the age factor. Blue light penetrates deep in the eye and causes damage to the macula and retina. The effects are compounded with frequent blue light exposure. Macular Degeneration is not reversible and eventually causes blind spots and vision loss.

3. Sleep Disruption
Blue light from the sun helps to regulate the circadian rhythm. However, blue light waves from devices can disrupt the circadian rhythm when used right before bed. As a result, people have more trouble falling asleep and are unable to reach the deeper levels of sleep which are the most restful and restorative. It is best to put down devices an hour before sleep in order to let your body adjust and achieve deeper sleep. Several serious health problems have been linked to sleep deprivation such as obesity, diabetes, cancerous tumors, and conditions similar to ADHD.

Because this explosion in technology use is relatively recent, the full effects on health and vision cannot yet be known. It will have the largest impact on children who are growing up in front of screens and will have exponentially larger exposure levels than adults. However, adults should take precautions as well. A few ways to slow the effects of the extreme levels of blue light exposure that are now so common are to put down your devices occasionally, keep the 20-20-20 rule in mind, and wear ‘tinted’ lenses.

We know that it is difficult to step away from smartphones and computers for very long, especially when your job requires their use, but try to give your eyes frequent breaks. A good general guideline to follow is the 20-20-20 rule. In other words, after 20 minutes of staring at a screen, give your eyes a 20 second break to focus on something at least 20 feet away. This gives your eyes time to rest and reset themselves before returning to work.

An easy and effective precaution is to wear blue light protective lenses which either absorb or deflect blue light so that it does not harm your eyes. These lenses will have little to no visible tint but will allow you to look at screens without danger of the damage blue light waves can cause. These are even recommended for kids as digital screens are a part of their daily life from an even earlier age. Ask us about the best lens options for you and your family!
